Bighorn Trail 100 Course Map

Map and profile info on the Bighorn race website is fairly limited so here’s the info from the 2009 race combined from my GPS (which died at mile 87) from the 100 mile race and Karla’s GPS file from the 52 mile race.

Elevation:
Approximately 16,500ft ascent
High point: 9,100ft, Low point: 3,900ft

Here's the full Bighorn 100 elevation profile. What the race refers to as "The Haul" is pretty steep but is very short. The climb up and over Dry Fork is significantly bigger on the way back inbound.

Trail Conditions:

From Dayton to Dry Fork the trail is dry. There are a couple streams between upper Sheep Creek aid and Dry Fork but you can get over or around them without getting wet.

Dry Fork to Bear Camp starts to get muddy and rough. Between the muddy sections, there are stretches of single track with overgrown sage brush that snaps at your shins and makes it difficult to keep up a steady pace.

Bear Camp to Footbridge on the Wall has some of the worst mud on the entire course. You can lose your shoes here if they aren’t tied on tight.

Footbridge to Narrows is mostly dry, rocky single track following the river.

Spring Marsh to Porcupine is mostly wet and muddy. There are a lot of wet, boggy sections and several stream crossings. Most of the wet stuff is only ankle deep and you can run right through it. There are places to pick your way around on the side of the trail hopping logs and bits of dry ground. But you’ll get cold and wet eventually so the fastest route is straight through. In the last mile or two before Porcupine there will probably be some slushy snow. In 2009 the snow levels weren’t too bad and there were just some piles of snow that only took 2-3 ankle to shin deep steps to get through. There were also a few semi-dry sections that were chewed up with elk tracks that made the footing pretty rough.
