Horsetooth Loop – the long way

Alex and I have run variations of this loop several times as training runs from our houses on the west side of Fort Collins. This year we made this an official FCTR March Madness fun run.

It’s a great training route with a variety of terrain from road to steep technical trail. And it’s a lot of fun to see the full distance of the loop that you cover by foot around the reservoir from the ridge lines and peaks along the way.

There are several places along the way to cut this route shorter but here is the long way around.

From Alex’s

  • South on 38E to the Blue Sky Tunnel
  • Blue Sky to Soderberg Trailhead
  • Up Towers and then the long way around to Horsetooth Rock: Stout, Falls, Horsetooth Trailhead, Southridge, Audra Culver
  • Across Westridge to the unmarked cut off around the back of the Towers
  • Down Towers to Mill Creek into Lory and back up Howard to Arthur’s Rock
  • Timber to the Lory Visitor Center
  • North on the road to Reservoir Ridge
  • Up the ridge and left to take the long loop around the top
  • South on Foothills to the top of Maxwell with a short dog leg to tag the A hill.
  • Down behind the stadium, across Pineridge, past the dog park, and back to Alex’s house.
